Compare Product Hunt week traffic to your baseline without fooling yourself

Pin the launch window, separate bots from buyers, and read sales ratio against normal weeks.

All guides on this topic: Gumroad & Lemon sellers

Product Hunt day is a stress test: traffic spikes, comments need replies, and your analytics looks like a heart monitor. The mistake is comparing that week to “last month average” without pinning dates or separating curious visitors from buyers.

Part of digital product guides. Pair with the traffic-to-sales guide.

Pin three windows

  1. PH week (launch day −1 through +6).
  2. Pre-baseline (14 days before launch).
  3. Post-decay (days 14–27 after) to see hangover traffic.

Never merge PH week into rolling 28d until you write a note on the chart.

Metrics that matter for digital products

  • Visitors (tagged utm_source=producthunt or ph in your dictionary).
  • Sales count from Gumroad/Lemon webhooks.
  • Visits per sale inside PH pin vs baseline pin.
  • Revenue (gross or net, pick one).

Pageviews alone are useless on PH; half the clicks are makers browsing.

Bot and scraper noise

PH drives crawlers and preview bots. Spike in AI/indexing crawlers is normal. Do not count bot user-agents as visitors if your stack filters them.

Comment traffic vs listing traffic

utm_content values like ph-listing vs ph-comment-reply help if you link from comments with distinct tags. Many founders use one link, accept blended PH source.

Ratio interpretation

If PH week ratio is better than baseline, launch offer and listing resonated. If ratio is worse but sales absolute is higher, you bought awareness, plan email follow-up.

Email follow-up week

Sales often land days 3–10 via newsletter, not PH click. Extend revenue pin to 14 days for digital products with long consideration.

Compare to Stripe SaaS launches

SaaS might track signups + trials; digital products track immediate sales. Same pinning discipline, different event names.

Support load distortion

PH week you answer comments instead of fixing checkout. Low sales might be ops overload, not demand, note hours spent in pin comment.

Screenshot trap

Do not archive only PH upvote count. Archive visitors, sales, ratio, and top landing paths.

Repeat launches

Second PH launch for v2 needs new campaign slug ph-v2-2026, never reuse producthunt-launch across years.

Worked numbers

Baseline 14d: 1,800 visitors, 18 sales → ratio 100. PH pin 7d: 4,500 visitors, 45 sales → ratio 100 (same efficiency, more volume). Action: email list harder week 2, not rewrite listing.

PH is a week, not a lifestyle. Pin it, compare ratio to baseline, then get back to work that compounds.

Maker traffic vs buyer traffic

Product Hunt visitors skew toward builders evaluating tools, not always buyers for your $29 Notion pack. Expect high engagement, mixed purchase intent. Ratio may look worse than newsletter while absolute sales still rise, that is awareness buying, not failure. Segment PH traffic with utm_source=producthunt (or your dictionary equivalent) and compare only inside that segment when tuning listing copy.

Pre-launch baseline hygiene

Baseline weeks should exclude other spikes: no simultaneous Twitter giveaway, no list blast. If life is messy, pin two baselines, quiet 14d and rolling 28d, and note which you trust more. Honest notes on the pin beat false precision.

Upvote count is not in your database

Upvotes correlate loosely with visitors. Archive:

  • Unique visitors (PH-tagged)
  • Sales count (webhook)
  • Ratio vs baseline
  • Top three landing paths
  • Refund count if applicable

Screenshot upvotes for morale; do not put them in revenue slides.

Comment strategy and attribution

Founders who reply in comments with untagged links blend “comment engagement” into generic PH source. If you care, use utm_content=comment-day1 vs utm_content=listing on links you control. Many skip this, then accept blended PH and judge with ratio only.

Post-PH email bridge

Week two email to “people who visited but did not buy” needs its own utm_campaign=ph-followup-2026 so you do not attribute sales to PH click when the email closed. Extend revenue attribution window 14d but split campaigns in the table.

Comparing first vs second launch

Second PH launch for v2 competes with your existing audience, not cold PH only. Baseline for v2 should be pre-v2-launch 14d, not your 2024 first launch week. Saved funnel UTMs help reuse structure without reusing campaign slugs.

Bot traffic on launch day

Launch day bot swarm spikes can inflate visitors without sales. If your analytics filters bots, ratio may improve artificially on PH day, check human-only visitor count if available. Pair with AI crawler guides when docs get hammered same week.

SaaS signup launches on PH

Trials defer cash. PH week signups with revenue in week three need event split per Stripe subscription attribution. Digital product immediate sales vs SaaS trials are different postmortems on the same platform.

Decision tree after PH pin closes

  • Ratio better than baseline, sales up → double email + SEO on winning angles.
  • Ratio worse, sales up → you bought reach; fix nurture.
  • Ratio better, sales flat → traffic quality high but offer weak, pricing or checkout friction.
  • Ratio worse, sales flat → listing or product-market misfit for PH audience.

Stakeholder one-pager template

“PH pin 2026-03: 4.2k visitors (+140% vs baseline), 38 sales (+111%), ratio 111 vs baseline 100, net $1,482. Follow-up email scheduled. No price change.”

One paragraph prevents debate about whether PH “worked.”

Hub reminder

Cross-link two products one domain if PH featured only one SKU while site traffic promoted another, blended PH metrics lie quietly.

Hunter and maker network effects

PH traffic includes hunters’ audiences, not identical to your ICP. Ratio may look “average” while delivering valuable email signups. Track list growth if ratio alone discourages repeat PH.

Time zone launch hour

PH resets Pacific-centric; your baseline visitors may be EU-heavy. Hour-of-day charts explain “dead launch morning” that wakes up afternoon, not failure, timezone.

Refund spike week two

Impulse PH buyers refund after skimming. Net revenue pin should include refunds; gross ratio flatters. Note refund rate in postmortem.

Listing video vs screenshot

Video listings change engagement not always conversion. Compare ratio to baseline when only listing creative changed, rare clean test.

Cross-posting PH link on X

Same utm_campaign on PH and X blends sources. Use utm_medium=producthunt vs utm_medium=social even when URL is identical listing.

Waiting list vs immediate buy

Some PH launches collect waitlist; sales lag weeks. PH week visitor spike with zero sales may be correct, extend revenue pin 30d.

Competitor launch same day

Category noise on PH splits attention, your ratio vs baseline still valid; vs “PH average” is not available. Do not invent industry benchmark.

Team capacity honest score

Add qualitative 1–5 “response capacity” in pin comment. Low sales + low capacity → demand unknown. Low sales + high capacity → offer issue.

Archive for investors

Investors ask “how did PH go?”, pinned ratio + net revenue + list growth beats upvote screenshot. Link Gumroad ratio guide methodology in appendix slide.

Year-over-year PH

Annual PH with new SKU: compare to last year’s pin, not last month baseline. Seasonality matters for template shops.

After action: three commitments

Write three bullets max after pin closes, e.g. “email follow-up, fix listing FAQ, ignore bot spike.” More than three and nothing ships.
